OnePlus co-founder thanks Apple re: educating market about dual cameras

The OnePlus 5 will be launched anytime today and as leaks showed a big similarity with the iPhone 7 in terms of design, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei recently confirmed the OP 5 will also feature the same dual camera setup as well. Like the iPhone 7, the OnePlus 5 will feature a standard camera and a telephoto camera.

Dual cameras on smartphones aren’t implemented the same way. Huawei’s implementation is different, with one camera shooting black and white, the other in colored,  and then overlaid together, to attain greater photo details. LG’s include one standard camera and the other, a wide angle shooter. OnePlus 5 opted to go with the same setup as the iPhone 7’s.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei acknowledges Apple for educating the market about dual cameras, quoted as saying

“We were exploring dual cameras last year, but we knew education cost would be too high, we have to thank Apple for educating the market for us”.

OnePlus has been working intensively with Dx0 Labs to attain better camera results in the hopes of competing with Samsung and Apple, the benchmarks for smartphone camera quality.  The OnePlus 5’s main camera has a 16-megapixel Sony sensor with an f/1.7 aperture lens while the second shooter has a 20-megapixel Sony sensor with f/2.6 telephoto lens.
